I’m Breanna, a 40 year old retired firefighter, with a passion for food, cooking, and discovering local secrets. So, this blog is about my move from the fire service to the kitchen, and beyond….Out of the fire and into the frying pan, so to speak. I’m just so clever.
6 Years ago, I had to retire early from the fire service due to a line of duty back injury. A very hard thing to have to do. What a lesson in identity it continues to be.
So, what to do with myself now that I have in many ways lost who I was. I mean, when you’re a firefighter, that’s who you are, not what you do for a job. So where does that leave me, now that I’m not doing that, and in many feel like I failed? Well, it seems to have led me to the kitchen.
I was very lucky to have grown up in a family that was able to, and valued dinnertime. Almost every night we sat down together for dinner. No TV, no (rotary) phones, and delicious, healthy, cooked meals. I have no doubt that played a large roll in my love for food now.
Follow that up by years of the ritual of firehouse cooking and meals, and I was bound to find my next path relating to food. In last several years I have become more and more aware of, and interested in, the abundance of amazing local food in Sonoma County, and the SF Bay Area in general, and excited to share what I find.
I have procrastinated for reasons known and unknown, made excuses, distracted myself doubted myself, etc, etc and have finally decided to get moving on this blog. I want to have a way to share my love of cooking, local food, nutrition, and creativity in a flexible way, that will let me have a freedom of schedule I never had in the fire service. It’s all about silver linings.
So, I’ll leave you there for now. More to come.
